Let it Shine!
As researchers, we believe in the power of innovation - and enlightenment. In this case, quite literally. Read Bartel's opinion piece on the WakaWaka Lamp, an Initiative supported by the Wereldpodium Tilburg. The piece does not only underline the contribution of technology to development of some of the poorest regions in Africa, but highlights particularly the implications for the ongoing response to Ebola.
Of course, we are waiting for more research on this!

Improving Disaster Relief
The UiA Research Magazine TEFT published a story about our work in the Philippines - and how we after our field work continued working on the data we collected.
Despite the work with models, simulations, writing and reporting, and teaching consumes most of our time, we don't just stick at our desks only, but also organize smaller crises at home, such as the serious game evacuating UiA we played in November in Grimstad to test the SmartRescue app.

Getting Connected
December 2013
Verbinding is the leading magazine on communication for crisis response in The Netherlands. Particularly in crisis, communication between the different responding agencies needs to be reliable; wrong or lacking information can cause harm to both the population and the responders.
How can Social Media be used as a source of information in this context? Is Twitter a lifeline for the population in need? What can we in Europe learn from work conducted in the Philippines?
Bartel answered these questions in an Interview for the Verbinding that you can download below.

The Role of Information and Communication Technologies
December 10 2013
The team at the Centre for Integrated Emergency Management in Norway focuses on Technology development. How can we enable communication, when there is hardly any electricity? How to set up ad hoc networks when there is no cellphone coverage any more?
The article of the Grimstad Adrestidende addresses the questions which requirements the tools that are developed for crisis response need to fulfil, and how we planned to test them in the Philippines.

The impact of Digital Volunteers
December 3 2013
One of our aims in the Philippines was gaining a better understanding about the impact of the work of the digital volunteers. By monitoring social media and crowd-sourcing information, digitial volunteers have succeeded in creating live crisis maps, using tools such as Google maps, which have provided valuable data to support decision making. Has this information reached the responders? How can we help making it more useful?
Bartel was interviewed about all these aspects in the Dutch newspaper Trouw; the article was published on December 3 2013 and can be dowloaded below.
