Getting Ready for the Unexpected!

May 24-27, Kristiansand, Norway
Our home conference (quite literally...), will be really busy.
We will be presenting Long and Short papers on Coordination, Logistics in the Ebola response, Human Centred Design and Ethnographic Research. You can also meet us in the panels discussion Crisis Management Research on Monday (Tina), and Ebola on Wednesday (Bartel and Jonas). The full program is available on https://www.conftool.com/iscram2015/sessions.php.
The Decision Support Track with Tina and Matthieu has become one of the largest Tracks of the Conference, and we are happy that this track has received so much attention.
Hope that many of you come to join us in Norway!

#WhatDoesItTake?
Keeping Syria on the Agenda!
The Nature of Information Management is the focus of our paper for the HumTech2015 Conference.
We provide a comparison between the complex setting in Syria and our experiences in the Philippines after Haiyan, along the dimensions of Humanitarian Information Management. We highlight the implications of information sensitivity and links to decision-making and coordination.

POMS2015
May 08-11 2015, Washington DC, USA

At the POMS 2015 Conference, we will present our work on Humanitarian Logistics in the context of the West Africa Ebola Outbreak, presenting two papers based on our Ebola field research highlighting the specifics of this very response, going beyond the typical response patterns for natural vs. sudden onset disasters. We report on the logistics challenges related to information sharing and coordination; access; volatile demand patterns; specific medical requirements.
In another paper we propose an approach to to mix case studies and quantitative models. This work addresses this problem by proposing a field-oriented research, which aims to model and analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the Value Stream of West African Ebola Crisis Management.
Hope to see you in Washington!
AAAI Spring Symposium
Structured Data for Humanitarian Technologies: Perfect Fit or Overkill? #SD4HumTech15
March 23-25, Palo Alto, USA
New technologies provide novel opportunities to manage disasters. This paradigm has been a driver, also for the DRL team. In our presentation on Bringing Structure to the Disaster Data Typhoon: an Analysis of Decision-Makers’ Information Needs in the Response to Haiyan, we argue for taking on a problem-centred perspective. Rather than collecting data and pushing it out in large data warehouses, we advocate providing decision support for dedicated problems.
Together with Olga Vybornova (UCL, Belgium), we are currently building the ontology suggested - and look forward to discussing potential implementation with you!
