26th International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering
Conference Dates: June 18-20, 2014
Thessaloniki, Greece
Real-time information systems and overly complex financial products have been blamed as causes of recent financial crises. The IS Engineering community has begun to address the role of information systems in predicting, preventing, and reacting to crises of many different kinds: data-centric financial and fiscal dependency analysis of the globalized financial systems, resilience of critical infrastructures by information management, reaction to natural disasters such as fires, floods, earthquakes, etc.
Bartel will address these challenges in his a keynote at CAISE 2014 on IS for Disaster Management on June 19, 2014.

Humanitarian Technology: Science, Systems and Global Impact
Conference Dates: May 13-15, 2014
Boston, MA, USA
HumTech2014 was a great start for a longer road trip of the DRL team through the US. We enjoyed discussing how technology can support disaster response - ranging from drones and robots to exploring the options of cyber aid.
The DRL team was proud to be nominated for the Best Paper Award on a Paper by Jennifer and Tina on "Innovative Research Design" - and we congratulate Lina Nilsson from UC Berkeley, who received the Award. In a great panel session with Enzo Bolletino, Jennifer, and Bartel we also discussed our insights on coordination in the aftermath of Haiyan.
However interesting these findings are, it was most important for us to engage in a dialogue with the practitioners at the conference - and we hope to contribute more and better to your work in future!

Tag der Logistik
April 10, 2014 Muenster, Germany This year's Tag der Logistik focused on Humanitarian Logistics. Supply Chain Management is vital for disaster response and encompasses much more than sheds and trucks: logistics covers the entire network design, sourcing, distribution and monitoring of disaster relief good and services. Managing information to support decision-makers is essential the focus of DRL. In the Session „Every Minute Counts" we played the augmented reality game „Disaster In My Backyard" in the city of Muenster - see pictures below! Thanks to Kenny Meesters who represented DRL, and the colleagues from ERCIS for the invitation - looking forward to continuing our collaboration! |

Emergency Conference
Conference Dates: April 8-10, 2014
Rotterdam, The Netherlands
DRL will be involved in two events of the Emergency Conference: In Workshop 1.4. on Tuesday, April 8th, Bert Brugghemans and Roy Johannik show how monitoring and crisis information management can improve crisis management. Actors in crisis communication need to know what is the reaction of citizens during a crisis. Negative feelings, but also reactions of support and crowdsourced actions have to be mapped to get a good view on communication needs. But monitoring is also useful for other processes in crisis management. In Workshop 2.3, on April 9th, Kenny Meesters will discuss - together with our crowd funders Geert Gijs and Jan Otten - Big disasters: from the Benelux to the Philippines. The workshop focuses on how the Benelux might look after a big disaster. Since the floods of 1953, the rise of new technologies have revolutionised disaster management. In the past, conceots of crowd souring and mapping, open source crisis management systems and resilience were unknown, yet many of the fundamental principles were applied - so join Kenny to discuss what would happen today!

i-ESA'14 conference
Conference Dates: March 24-28, 2014
Albi, France
The I-ESA'14 conference in Albi brought together the world's leading researchers and practitioners in the area of enterprise interoperability. Bartel was one of the keynote speakers at the conference, speaking about the role and importance of interoperability in humanitarian information management on Thursday, March 27. The conference organisers Frédérick Benaben and Matthieu Lauras also contributed to the crowd funding, and our first interaction took place during the I-ESA workshops on Monday, March 24. For us, it was a great opportunity to present our work to this community - and to issue some challenges in the domains of Humanitarian Logistics and Information Management to this, very technology driven community.
A special thanks to Frédérick and Anne-Marie Barthe, for the discussions on event-driven crisis management, and to Matthieu Lauras for sharing his thoughts on the future of Humanitarian Logistics. We will be happy to continue working with the whole team of the Collaborative Decision Lab - and look forward to seeing you at the Summer School!

DRL Workshop: Improving Disaster Resilience?!
Tilburg University, January 27-29
For the team of the Disaster Resilience Lab the opportunity to conduct field research on site has resulted in a unique collection of data and interviews that we are now evaluating and analysing together. During our workshop at Tilburg University, the whole team will come together to hands on work with the data and develop dissemination and exploitation strategies. We will explore the most important leads and questions that arised during our field trip around sensemaking and decision support. Each of us brings in a very different expertise, background and research interest, creating a truely interdisciplinary atmosphere. Questions will entail research methodologies and generalisability of data collected in the field; engagement vs. neutrality of research; data analysis and statistics; risk perception and management; teaching and training.
If you would like to discuss with us as we go, send a tweet to @disastlab or contact us at info@disasterlab.org
