Refugees welcome
The European Refugee Crisis is revealing the
lack of a coordinated response across all European countries. In a political
void, and ever changing policies, access conditions, and routes, thousands of
grassroots initiatives have sprung up in the past weeks to welcome refugees.
National efforts of humanitarian organisations from Greece, Hungary, or Serbia to
Germany, Belgium and Sweden do not provide a comprehensive picture of the
situation. The fragmented data collection and analysis and the lack of a
unified framework for this response leads, to fragmented and insufficient coordination.

ACADEMIA Gets involvedAnswering to the urgent needs of the refugees arriving in Europe, the response to the refugee crisis is largely carried by European citizens and volunteers. Also universities are tuning in: in Belgium, the Free University of Brussels created the position of a refugee coordinator for the university, while the rector of the Catholic University of Leuven dedicated his entire opening speech for the Academic year 2015-2016 to the responsibility of universities for the refugees. In Germany, Kiron University was founded as the first online university enabling refugees who have lost their certificates to enroll in a full program, offering accredited degrees, while the Refugee Law Clinic at the Humboldt University in Berlin offers free courses and advising to refugees. Several UK universities are offering scholarships to refugees, and more universities follow their lead. Mappers and ICT communities are helping as volunteers for the SBTF, and universities are also setting up Sahana and Ushahidi instances - such as the CIEM Ushahidi map for the response in Norway.
